Each of the graduate programs has its own application procedures and requirements. Please see the instructions for your specific program listed below.
Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate degree with sufficiently high GPA, see GPA guidelines below
- GRE scores are optional, good scores on the GRE and subject tests will be considered, but are not required. GRE Test Codes: 0806 Planetary Science; 0501 Atmospheric Science; 1839 School Number.
- International students need to have completed TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS tests. Required TOEFL score is 230 or better (computer test) or 84 or better (Internet-based test). If your undergraduate program instruction language was exclusively in English, the TOEFL requirement can be waived.
- PhD Only: Undergraduate prerequisite courses for the PhD program
- Four terms of calculus, including one term of differential equations
- Two terms of physics with lab
- One course in computer programming, preferably Fortran or C

All MEng Program applications are submitted to the College of Engineering. PhD applications are submitted to the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

PhD Applicants: The application for admission is completed online through the Rackham Graduate School website. The site allows you to save your work and complete the application over time. Applications must be submitted before 11:59 pm EST on the deadline day listed above to be considered. The online application system will be disabled at the deadline.
Your application will include a Statement of Purpose, a Personal Statement, your CV/resume, three letters of recommendation, transcripts (directions for submission below), GRE scores (optional), and TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS scores (international students only, see requirement above).
The application fee must be paid through the online application. The fee is $75 for US citizens or permanent residents and $90 for non-US citizens. The Rackham Graduate School provides fee waivers to students who meet certain criteria. You can find more information here.
All PhD & MS applicants are required to submit transcripts to Rackham by the application deadline. It is your responsibility to request the release of any records from the institutions. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Information on uploading transcripts can be found on Rackham’s website. Email rackadmis@umich.edu with any Rackham questions.
