Our researchers, leaders, and educators are making headlines with their innovative work, including the impacts of a wandering auroral oval.

Lead Author and U-M Climate and Space Alumnus Dr. Agnit Mukhopadhyay was interviewed for the article “Sunscreen, Clothing and Caves May Have Given Modern Humans an Edge Over Neanderthals When Earth’s Magnetic Field Wandered” in Smithsonian Magazine. The article covers the paper “Wandering of the auroral oval 41,000 years ago” which has been published in Science Advances. | April 21, 2025

The research was reported on more extensively in Michigan News and other outlets. This study included work by many other researchers, including Professor Michael Liemohn, Assistant Professor Dan Welling, and Natalia Ganjushkina and Austin Brenner representing U-M Climate and Space, as well as Raven Garvey in the U-M Department of Anthropology.
